Who needs orthotics?

Although almost anyone who wants additional support for walking or running is a good candidate for orthotics, orthotics are especially good for those with common foot problems that cause pain, swelling, and discomfort. But even if you don’t suffer from pain you could benefit from orthotics. Here’s a brief suumary of common symptoms that can indicate a need for orthotics.

Orthotics could be helpful to you if you experience any of the following:

  • Bunions
  • Unequal shoe wear (for example, if one side of your shoe wears down quicker than the other)
  • Chronic heel, knee, or lower back pain
  • Flat feet
  • Shin splints
  • Frequent ankle sprains
  • Gait abnormalities (e.g. over-pronation)

If you feel discomfort when you walk, you should seek help from a foot specialist. They will advise you on whether orthotics device could help, and – if so – which would be best for you. Remember, the longer you leave a problem untreated, the more likely the condition degenerate and become chronic.
