Introduction

We’re so familiar with the foot that we’re tempted to think of it as a rather ordinary limb. But, like every other part of the human body, it’s anything but ordinary. In fact, it’s even more extraordinary than most other parts of the body.

It has, for example, an amazing 26 bones and 33 joints – all of which combine with 19 muscles and 107 ligaments to provide not just balance and mobility, but enough strength to support more than 100,000 pounds of pressure for every mile walked. So it’s little wonder that even small problems with the foot can have major effects. That’s why it’s worth investing time and effort keeping them healthy!
